Gasparilla 2010

It was a busy weekend in SOHO. Friday night was jamming at virtually ever South Tampa restaurant and bar. Expanded serving areas and cover charges were evident at most locations and it didn't seem to deter the crowd. Sunday morning saw all breakfast/brunch locations pretty packed, but the cooler weather later on Sunday and the need to recover from Saturday kept many at home. The concert at the new Curtis Hixon Park in downtown was very good, but the real achievement was the park itself. We have been talking for over 2 years about how this park and the RiverWalk are going to change Tampa, we believe we may have underestimated it.

Saturday was rainy, but not cold. As I walked north on Howard Avenue at around 10 AM I was greeted by a Tampa Police officer wanting to know what I was drinking. The Celsius energy drink I had was not recognizable to him so he had to examine it closely to be sure I was not violating the open container law that was being cracked down on for the day. When I asked what would have happened if it had been a beer - I was told I would have been arrested. While I understand the rules, it seems sort of not quite right when there were plenty of beer stands all across the parade route. Oh well.
